 The Amani Kibera Community Library is a non-profit, grassroots Organization situated in Mashimoni village of the Nairobi, Kibera slums in Kenya. For the second time in 3 years they emerged the winners of the 2013 National Maktaba (Library) Awards community library of the year category. The Maktaba Awards aim to recognize excellence in the provision of library and information services in Kenya. The New Amani Kibera library serves about 350 reader a day. The readers are mainly teachers and students from primary and secondary schools around Kibera and its surroundings. Currently, the library serves students from 172 schools. Besides reading and doing research, the library now operates a cyber cafe and a computer training center. It also hosts holiday workshops for the kids when schools are closed and conducts Global Education workshops for teacher. Each Saturday afternoon it also hosts the book club, where students from different schools seat together and discuss different topics of their interest. Read More…
